It is now clinically established that Jewish women are at an increased risk for breast cancer due to a genetic mutation. The phenomenon of Jewish women breast cancer that is giving sleepless nights to many researchers in the 21st century probably had its origin in a DNA mutations, that occurred hundreds of years ago. The faulty gene was passed on to the next generation and the next. The net result is today Ashkenazi Jewish women are considered the major carrier of the mutated cancer causing genes called BRCA1 and BRCA2. Here are some Jewish women breast cancer facts
1 out of every 50 Ashkenazic Jews carries either a BRCA1 mutation or BRCA2 mutation.
Specific BRCA mutations have been identified in the Ashkenazic Jews women. These two specific mutations could not be traced in the non-Jewish population.
The Jew women who are born with mutated BRCA1 have up to an 85% risk of developing breast cancer and a 44% risk of contracting ovarian cancer in their lifetimes.
This is quite amazing as we compare the Jewish women breast cancer risk with that of the general population. For the non Jewish women, it is estimated at an overall 12% risk for breast cancer, and 1% for ovarian cancer
